# Maib for non-resident founders

> How Moldova Agroindbank (Maib) handles business account opening for non-resident-owned SRLs: documents, currencies, SEPA, online banking.

Maib, formally Moldova Agroindbank, is the bank most foreign founders meet first when they form a Moldovan *societate cu răspundere limitată*. It is the largest commercial bank in the country by assets, branches, and customer base, and it carries the largest share of business banking files for non-resident-owned structures. That scale brings advantages (real English-language support, mature online banking, broad currency coverage) and the friction that any large institution applies to a KYC file.

## The bank in brief

Maib traces its corporate history to the early 1990s and the post-Soviet restructuring of Moldova's agricultural finance system. It is today the dominant universal commercial bank in the country, with a retail, corporate, and SME franchise that no other Moldovan *Banca Comercială* matches at scale. Ownership consolidated in the past decade under an investor consortium led by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development together with international private equity. Supervision is by *Banca Națională a Moldovei* (BNM), under the AML perimeter set by [Law 308/2017](/en/blog/moldova-aml-law-308-2017-foreign-srl/). Maib was one of the eight Moldovan banks admitted to SEPA on 6 October 2025.

## Account opening for non-resident-owned SRLs

Maib accepts business accounts for SRLs with a non-resident director and non-resident UBO, provided the file is clean and the business profile is intelligible. There is no statutory exclusion of foreign ownership and no requirement that the director hold a Moldovan residence permit. What Maib does require is a documented picture of the activity, the counterparties, and the source of funds.

A typical file contains the incorporation certificate, articles of association, IDNO tax code, UBO declaration under Law 308/2017, passport copies and two recent proofs of address per director and UBO (traditional-bank statements, not neobanks), a short business plan with a twelve-month projected transaction flow, source-of-funds documentation, sample contracts where available, and a power of attorney for the legal representative.

Account signing happens in person at Maib's Chișinău head office. A power of attorney accelerates dossier preparation, but it does not replace the in-person signing meeting. That trip cannot be avoided, and the position is consistent across the Moldovan sector.

Maib generally does not accept activities with a heightened risk profile (unregulated crypto trading, online gambling, payment processing, currency exchange) without enhanced due diligence that often runs longer than the founder's appetite. For the wider operational frame see [opening a bank account in Moldova](/en/blog/moldova-business-bank-account/).

## Multi-currency capability and SEPA status

Maib offers business accounts in MDL, EUR, USD, RON, and GBP under a single client number, with other currencies on request. Each sits in its own ledger account with its own IBAN, visible in a single online view.

> Since SEPA went live on 6 October 2025, the euro leg of a Maib account behaves operationally like a eurozone account for payments to and from participating countries.

A German or Dutch buyer paying a Maib EUR IBAN now sees the same speed and pricing as a domestic transfer. Maib has confirmed both SEPA and SEPA Instant participation. USD payments still run on correspondent rails through SWIFT, with the usual one to two business day settlement and the usual intermediary fees. RON coverage is competent but unexceptional; where a founder runs heavy Romanian-leg flows, the Banca Transilvania-linked alternative described in the [Victoriabank guide](/en/blog/victoriabank-business-account-foreigners/) is worth comparing.

## Online banking and remote KYC support

Maib's business online banking platform ([maib.md](https://www.maib.md/)) is the most mature in the Moldovan market. The interface runs in Romanian, Russian, and English; the English version covers the full operational workflow, including SEPA payments, salary runs, currency conversion, and statement export. Two-factor authentication uses a mobile app token, and the platform supports multi-user roles with view-only or limited-action permissions.

What it does well: domestic and SEPA payments, statement export in a format accounting systems consume directly, scheduled payments, card management. What it does less well: API-driven integrations are limited compared with EU neobanks, and the mobile app, while functional, has a less polished UX than Wise or Revolut business apps.

Remote KYC support is partial. Maib will run pre-screening, document review, and the compliance interview by video. It will not waive the in-person signing meeting. That is a BNM-aligned position consistent across the sector. Founders comparing Moldovan options with neobank alternatives should read the [Wise, Revolut, and Mercury comparison](/en/blog/wise-revolut-mercury-for-moldovan-srl/) before deciding how to split flows.

## Strengths and limitations for international founders

**Strengths.** Scale, English-language coverage on the business side, mature online platform, SEPA and SEPA Instant participation, broad currency menu, predictable procedure. Maib is the path of least resistance for most non-resident-owned SRLs with an ordinary business profile. The compliance team understands cross-border export, IT services, and consulting flows.

**Limitations.** As market leader, Maib is procedural. A file that does not match a standard pattern can take longer than a smaller bank would take on the same dossier. Enhanced due diligence on borderline activity is conservative. USD payment routing depends on correspondent banking and occasionally suffers from intermediary-bank delays. Bank fees on FX conversion and USD wires are not the lowest available; for high-volume FX or treasury work, a comparison with Moldindconbank (see the [MICB note](/en/blog/moldindconbank-international-clients/)) is worth running.

Deposit protection through the [Fund for Deposit Guarantee](https://fgdsb.md/) applies at the standard cap of approximately MDL 100,000 per depositor per bank in 2026. CRS applies in the usual way.

## Banking with Maib: a typical six-month experience

In month one, formation runs in parallel with KYC pack assembly. The Maib file is submitted once the SRL is registered with ASP and the IDNO is issued. From submission to compliance call is typically five to ten working days; from compliance call to in-person signing another five to fifteen. End-to-end timing from a clean file to a live account is three to six weeks.

In month two the founder usually receives a follow-up KYC contact, asking for early invoices and confirmation that the activity matches the business plan. This is normal. By month three the account behaves as expected: SEPA payments settle within a day, the platform is stable, cards are in hand.

Between months three and six the founder typically meets the FX conversion cost: Maib's spread on EUR-MDL is real, and on USD-EUR it is meaningful. Many founders set up a parallel Wise account for tactical FX while keeping Maib as the primary banking relationship for SEPA, MDL operations, and tax payments to *Serviciul Fiscal de Stat* (see [SFS](https://sfs.md/)).

## Frequently asked questions

### Will Maib open an account if my SRL has no resident director?

Yes. There is no statutory requirement that an SRL director be a Moldovan resident, and Maib accepts non-resident director files where the dossier is clean. A foreign-passport director with a Moldovan tax-registered SRL is a familiar pattern for the compliance team.

### Do I need to provide a six-month business forecast?

A short business plan with a twelve-month projected transaction flow is standard. Maib does not require a formal management forecast, but it does want a clear picture of inbound and outbound flows, expected monthly volume, and main counterparty geographies. Two or three pages, written for the bank, are usually sufficient.

### Is the online banking in English?

Yes. The business platform supports English across the full operational workflow: payments, statements, FX, cards, and user administration. The English version is feature-complete for most foreign founders' needs.

### What's the typical account-opening timeline?

End-to-end timing from a clean file is three to six weeks: five to ten working days from submission to the compliance call, and another five to fifteen from compliance call to in-person signing. Files with gaps extend the timeline.

### Does Maib handle USD?

Yes. Maib offers USD business accounts under the standard multi-currency setup. USD payments route through correspondent banking on SWIFT, with the usual one to two business day settlement and intermediary fees. For high-volume USD flows the comparison with Moldindconbank is worth running, since MICB has historically held a stronger USD franchise.

### Can I open multiple currency accounts under one structure?

Yes. A single Maib client number supports multiple currency ledger accounts (MDL, EUR, USD, RON, GBP, others on request) each with its own IBAN, visible in one online banking view. This is the standard Moldovan corporate banking pattern.

## Working with us

Maib is the default starting point for most foreign founders we work with, but the right bank depends on the specific business profile. The structure and the bank route are decided together on the [discovery call](/en/contact-us/) before any documents are drafted. For the wider workflow see [company formation in Moldova](/en/company-formation-moldova/), [bank account opening](/en/bank-account-opening-in-moldova/), and the [SEPA membership note](/en/blog/moldova-sepa-integration-2025/).
